Waiting for Him to Show Off

IMG_6895.jpgGod doesn’t always show off in the way we want, the way we ask, the way we hope.
But He does give us many promises in the midst of our disappointments.

We believe Jesus when He tells us to seek and we will find, ask and we will receive, knock and the door will be opened to us. We trust our prayers are heard. We have faith in God, who loves us and promises to never leave us or forsake us, that He has plans for us to, to give us hope and a future, to prosper us and that nothing can separate us from His love.

But then,
Life.
Trials.
Struggles.
Uncertainties.
Disappointments,
Unpleasant surprises.

We are waiting for Him to show off. With the miracle. The answer. The victory. We wonder, where is the good God promises?
Why isn’t He showing up and showing off the way we know He can?

Will we trust Him?
Will we say as Paul did, we are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair? (2 Corinthians 4:8)

Can we rejoice in our confident hope, be patient in trouble, and keep on praying? (Romans 12:12)

Can we trust God and say, “O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay and You are the potter. We are formed by Your hand?” (Isaiah 65”8) Do we have faith in God when He says “As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand.” (Jeremiah 18:3)

Do we trust Him, whatever comes our way? And whatever doesn’t?

IMG_7047I love the the rock formations as we drove through the canyons. At the top of the cliffs, the sides have been sheared away and at the base of each lies a pile of rubble. As the dirt and rock crumbled away, beautiful patterns and striations in the stone emerge from beneath.

IMG_E7053.JPGIts as if God has chiseled the rock away, slowly removing that which isn’t for His glory, to reveal the beauty and His glory beneath.

When I lament the problems in the life, I have to ask, do I trust our Father’s wisdom when He doesn’t answer the way I want Him to, when He doesn’t provide what I asked for, when He doesn’t give what I hoped for. Do I trust Him in the trials to chisel away that which isn’t for His glory in order to reveal the beauty and His glory beneath? Do I trust Him to give what’s good and withhold what isn’t?

When I’m waiting for Him to show off, I have to ask myself, which do I desire more, the Giver or His gifts?

More Showing Off

As we continue to make our way with great expectation, we give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness, wanting to let the whole world know what he has done.

Psalm 66:4 (KJV)

As we left the Grand Canyon, we found a verse at the desert view overlook declaring all the earth worshipping the Lord and singing praises to his name.

“All the earth shall worship Thee and sing praises to thee; They shall sing praises to Thy name.” Psalm 66:4 (KJV)

Nativity rock

We spotted a nativity scene sculpted in desert rock (Mary kneeling on the left, the manger with the baby in the center, Joseph on the right bending over to look at the baby, a shepherd behind him to his left and a angel with towering wings to his right)

Good Shepherd

Although Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro has arms stretched wide to the masses, the rock formation we found in the desert resembled Jesus (upper left corner) standing, like a shepherd watching over his sheep.

In the distance, praying hands emerge from the rock (lower right corner).

Straight highway through the wasteland

An iconic highway through the desert

Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting,
“Clear the way through the wilderness
for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland
for our God!” Isaiah 40:3 (NLT)

Heart of the mountain

When we reached our next destination, we were greeted with new breathtaking views and a heart showing up in the side of the mountain (center).

We pause when we can, but sometimes it still feels rushed. Sometimes the worries and concerns still follow us. Sometimes it is difficult to really slow down and listen.

As we hiked the rim trail, a large bird swooped by. At first we thought it might be a California Condor but a closer look through the binoculars and camera lens revealed a Golden Eagle. Soaring high above the canyon, showing off by doing loops over us, circling back as if to pose, to display, to demonstrate, to remind us that those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. (Isaiah 40:31)

Walking on, not growing faint, every twist in the trail, every turn in the path, each new vista, displayed another breathtaking, awe inspiring, beyond comprehension view.

I imagine God using time and the elements to carve away the dross, the grey rock, to reveal the layers he set down through the millennia, to reveal the beauty beneath, reds, whites, golds, striping the canyon walls, illuminated by the sun, declaring his glory.

The sheerness of the cliffs, the canyon walls. The height, the depth.
And God’s love goes deeper still
The vast expanse to the other side. The width, the length.
And God’s love goes wider still
To comprehend, to understand, to experience, the fullness of his love.
(Ephesians 3:18-19)

The worries of earlier fade with the light and I am raptured by a beauty beyond measure.

To pause. To hear the vast silence. To watch the shadows creep up the side of the canyon as the sun sets and the light fades. The blues and greys on the canyon walls fading to haze in the distance. To wait as the sun makes her way once again beyond the horizon.

To rest on an high vista, to watch another spectacular display of God’s glory. Beyond comprehension, it can only be breathed and imprinted on the heart.

around me are the crowds, who also pilgrimaged here to watch the sunset.
millions of footfalls, thousands of pictures, hundreds of selfies
the multitudes the nations, the many tongues, for one purpose
coming to see, to experience, to watch the sunset over the canyon.
muted conversations.
expectation.
waiting.

Do they know the One who carved this? Do they know the One who shaped each stone? Do they know the One who marks the course of the sun across the sky? Do they know the One who was here from the beginning and with a word brought it all into existence?

The sun drops below the horizon.
And they depart.

Missing the misty, quiet peace settling over the canyon. A cloak of grey velvet. The shawl of nightfall.
A garment of praise.

Oh how our God continually shows up and shows off. But are we looking?

Showing Up

IMG_6668Sometime the Lord shows up because we do.
And often it is in the midst of the time we spend with others.

When He is given the opportunity, He will show off in our relationships when we show up.
Especially when we are:
Being present.
Building memories.
Asking questions.
Listening.
Going deeper.

Precious is
Time with new friends, new family,
Time with family who have known you your whole life.
Time with friends you’ve had for years.
Time with your kids who are making their way in the world.

How do you spend your time with others?

In the words of C.S. Lewis
There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal… It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry… everlasting splendors.”

Showing Off

After telling a friend about our plans to take a (reflecting, listening, creating, writing contemplating) trip, she prayed and asked God to “show off” for us. Her prayer created anticipation, eager expectation, and a desire to see how God shows up and shows off.

And when we’re looking, its amazing what we can see.

IMG_6544

On the first day, wildflowers of blues, purples, oranges, yellows and reds blanketed the roadside like a patchwork quilt and wispy white angels floated in the cirrus clouds above.

As we put the miles behind us, I tried but didn’t do very well in setting aside distractions, problems and worries. I was still too “connected.”

So of course the Lord would have our first couple of nights and our drive over the next three days in locations with no cell coverage and no internet. (Okay, maybe I found and frantically used the locations where we did have coverage but they were few and far between). I definitely need more practice in being in the moment.

In the moments of practicing, I couldn’t help but see.

A gorgeous sunset shortly followed by moonset over the Davis Mountains prepared my heart, despite the twenty-five degree drop in temperature that left me shivering (really, 75 is cold?)

IMG_6566

As Jon took pictures and I snuggled with my furry ten-pound lap warmer, we watched evening light slowly fade as the sun pulled the last light of day over the horizon, replacing the sky with a canopy of dark velvet scattered with tiny dots of light as the stars came out one by one.

On the second day, a little less connected and a little more present, I continued to seek.

IMG_6610

Sunlight splashing off canyon walls towering above me and the wind rustling through the bamboo as it blew down the canyon

IMG_6605

The cool water on my feet as I waded into the Rio then wiggling my toes on a sandy path along the river banks

Another gorgeous sunset viewed through a “window” between peaks in the mountainsIMG_6624.JPG

Ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door (window?) will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7, GNT)

The list could go on and on, because if we look, we will always see how God shows off in a thousand different ways.

First Verse, a journey through the Psalms: Psalm 75

We thank you, O God!
We give thanks because you are near.
People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 75:1 (NLT)

When was the last time you told others of the wonderful deeds the Lord has done? Have you paused lately to consider exactly what wonderful deeds He has done for you? He’s provided us sunlight, air, food, life.  Those are some of the obvious. Maybe a family? A job? A home? But what are some wonderful deeds of which we might not be aware?

A peek into Paul’s letter to the Ephesians begins to unpack a few of these wonderful things:

  • Long before God laid down earth’s foundations, He had us in mind
  • God settled on us to be the focus of His love
  • God planned for us to be made whole and holy by His love

Wonderful, wouldn’t you agree? But it doesn’t stop there.

  • God decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ!
  • God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! (Go ahead. Imagine. Guess. Request. He does far more. And that’s quite wonderful)

Paul also told the Romans

  • God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
  • We have a wonderful new relationship with God—all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done in dying for our sins—making us friends of God.

Peter also chimes in, in his first letter, with more wonderful things God has done.

  • What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future.
  • But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.

In his second letter, Peter tells us God will give you, through his great power, everything you need for living a truly good life: he even shares his own glory and his own goodness with us!

Just a few of the amazing and wonderful things God has done for us. And there is so much more. This month, delve into the letters in the New Testament, give God thanks, and tell people everywhere of His wonderful deeds.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You have done such wonderful things for me. More than I can imagine. More than I can grasp or understand. As I rise each morning, blessed by the day You have given, bless me also with new insight into Your wonderful deeds. Let me live as one living a new life, a chosen life, a called life, and a good and holy life, ready to tell everyone who asks, the reason for the hope I have.

Grace and Peace
